Health care after a pregnancy can extend well beyond the first follow-up visit. Washington’s After-Pregnancy Coverage program can provide a full year of Apple Health, including for someone who had no Apple Health coverage while pregnant.

For residents of Snohomish and Island counties, the starting point is the same: check your coverage through Washington Healthplanfinder and make sure your pregnancy end date is recorded.

## Who can qualify?

The Health Care Authority says applicants must live in Washington, have had a pregnancy end within the past 12 months, meet the program’s initial income rules and be ineligible for another Apple Health program. Immigration status does not affect eligibility. Coverage is available regardless of how the pregnancy ended.

HCA describes the income standard as 210% of the federal poverty level, with a 5% income disregard included in its published table. As checked Oct. 30, the table lists monthly limits of $3,879 for a two-person household, $4,896 for three and $5,913 for four. Household size and countable income have program-specific rules, so use the application to establish your household’s eligibility. HCA updates income standards each April.

## If you already have Apple Health

After-Pregnancy Coverage begins automatically on the first day of the month after your pregnancy ends when Apple Health has your pregnancy information and estimated or actual end date. It continues for 12 months. Once enrolled, a change in income or household size does not shorten that coverage.

Check that your account includes the pregnancy and correct end date. HCA warns that missing pregnancy information can prevent the automatic extension. For example, its guidance says a pregnancy ending June 10 can be followed by coverage through June 30 of the next year.

## If you were uninsured during pregnancy

You can apply through [Washington Healthplanfinder](https://www.wahealthplanfinder.org/?ref=justabouts.com) if the pregnancy ended within the past 12 months. The program follows the pregnancy’s original 12-month coverage window; applying later does not create a new year starting on the application date.

Have the pregnancy end date and information about your household and income ready. For application help, call Washington Healthplanfinder at [1-855-923-4633](tel:18559234633). Ask the enrollment assistant to check After-Pregnancy Coverage specifically.

The coverage is comprehensive medical insurance. It can help you stay connected to ongoing care as well as pregnancy-related follow-up. Check your health plan’s provider network before booking an appointment.
