Before the Halloween treat bowl comes out, give cannabis edibles their own secure place: in the original labeled package, inside a locked cabinet or container, away from the sweets children will be eating.

That practical reminder appears in the Washington Health Care Authority’s [October Prenatal–25 Thrive newsletter](https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/WAHCA/bulletins/42f99d5?ref=justabouts.com). The [Washington Poison Center’s Halloween guidance](https://www.wapc.org/insights/halloween-safety/?ref=justabouts.com) makes the same point: keep edibles separate from Halloween candy, out of sight and reach, and locked up.

Cannabis products can come as gummies, cookies, brownies and drinks. The poison center warns that edibles can be very toxic to young children, who react differently to cannabis than adults do.

## A quick storage check before visitors arrive

- **Use a lock.** The [Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board](https://lcb.wa.gov/education/safe%5Fstorage%5Fand%5Fproper%5Fdisposal?ref=justabouts.com) advises secure storage. Choose a locked cabinet or container instead of relying on a high shelf or an ordinary box alone.
- **Keep the label with the product.** Whenever possible, retain the original child-resistant or resealable packaging, with labels intact, so the contents remain identifiable.
- **Give everyday food its own space.** Keep cannabis edibles separate from the candy bowl and other treats being shared with children.
- **Label homemade edibles clearly.** The state Department of Health’s [Cannabis Safely campaign](https://cannabissafelywa.org/safety/?ref=justabouts.com) recommends labeling and securely storing them, too.

## If a child may have eaten an edible

Call the [Washington Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222](https://www.wapc.org/what-to-do-for/cannabis-edibles/?ref=justabouts.com) immediately for an assessment. Its poison specialists provide free guidance around the clock.

**Call 911 for a medical emergency**, including a seizure, trouble breathing or someone who cannot be awakened. Those are the emergency signs identified in the Department of Health’s cannabis-safety guidance.
