Keeping naloxone nearby is a practical way to look out for someone you care about. It can reverse an opioid overdose involving fentanyl, heroin or prescription pain medicine, giving someone a chance to breathe again while emergency help is coming.

**If someone cannot be woken or is not breathing normally, call 911 immediately.** Give naloxone if available and follow the dispatcher’s instructions for CPR and breathing support.

Narcan is a brand of naloxone nasal spray. Programs may distribute that brand, a generic spray or injectable naloxone. Ask which product you are receiving and have someone explain how to use it. The [FDA’s guidance](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/access-naloxone-can-save-life-during-opioid-overdose?ref=justabouts.com) explains why having naloxone matters for families, caregivers and people taking opioids.

## A free kit can come by mail

The [People’s Harm Reduction Alliance](https://phra.org/washinton-state-free-naloxone-by-mail?ref=justabouts.com) partners with DOH to mail free naloxone kits to individuals anywhere in Washington. That includes Snohomish County and Camano Island.

The [current order form](https://phra.org/naloxone?ref=justabouts.com) is meant for people who cannot easily reach a community organization or pharmacy. It accepts one order per person per month, with up to three orders per household per month. This program serves individuals; schools, businesses, organizations and institutions need a different supply route. Read the form’s instructions before requesting a kit, and allow time for processing and delivery.

You can also ask a pharmacist about coverage. DOH says Apple Health/Medicaid covers naloxone without a copay; using coverage requires a prescription or the statewide standing order, which acts as one. Retail shelf prices and other insurance coverage can differ.

## Learn the steps before you need them

[Overdose warning signs](https://www.cdc.gov/stop-overdose/response/index.html?ref=justabouts.com) include inability to wake someone, slow or stopped breathing, gurgling or choking sounds, and discolored lips or nails. Treat a suspected overdose as an emergency even if you do not know exactly what the person took.

1. **Call 911 and start helping.** If the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, follow the dispatcher’s instructions for CPR. The [American Heart Association recommends CPR with breaths](https://cpr.heart.org/en/resuscitation-science/cpr-and-ecc-guidelines/adult-and-pediatric-special-circumstances-of-resuscitation/?ref=justabouts.com) in a suspected opioid overdose. Continue lifesaving support while naloxone is given.
2. **Use the kit’s directions.** For Narcan nasal spray, place the nozzle in a nostril and press firmly. Each device gives one dose. Do not test-spray it first. If needed, give another dose with a new device after 2-3 minutes, following the package instructions.
3. **Stay until help arrives.** Even after someone wakes, breathing can slow again. If they are breathing normally but remain unconscious, place them on their side. Keep watching their breathing.

When you get a kit, read the instructions, check the expiration date and tell someone close to you where it is. Follow the product’s storage directions. The [current Narcan label](https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?audience=consumer&setid=a0ebc83d-2892-40de-bc0a-775ce90b30db&ref=justabouts.com) says to protect it from light, freezing and excessive heat. A little preparation now can make it easier to act quickly and calmly.
