# Lakewood High adds culinary pathway, with a second course to follow

Lakewood High School students are learning their way around a kitchen through a new Culinary career and technical education pathway, with a second course planned for next school year.

One recent lesson put the new program into practice with taco salads. Under teacher Crystal Henderson’s guidance, students worked through food preparation step by step, including opening and handling packages of ground beef safely.

A camera projection system let the class watch the demonstration closely. The district also installed new student ovens over the summer to support the pathway.

Students taking Culinary 1 this school year will have the opportunity to continue in Culinary 2 next year, according to the district. That gives the first group a route to build on the kitchen skills they are developing now.

For students who enjoy cooking, the pathway adds a practical way to explore an interest during the school day. The district describes it as part of its effort to connect classroom learning with skills students can carry into future work.

Students interested in a future culinary class can ask their school counselor how it fits their course plan and when to review next year’s registration options.
