Tribal leaders and salmon advocates meeting in eastern Washington this month warned that salmon recovery efforts face growing pressure from energy development and climate change.

A [report published Oct. 26 by Northwest Treaty Tribes](https://nwtreatytribes.org/dams-data-centers-climate-change-northwest-tribes-confront-major-threats-to-salmon/?ref=justabouts.com) describes discussions at the Rise Up Northwest in Unity Conference at the Spokane Tribe Resort and Casino. Speakers addressed hydropower dams, proposed data centers and the demands development can place on rivers and other natural resources.

The Nez Perce Tribe and Columbia Snake River Campaign organized the gathering. Participants also discussed recovery work, including restoring habitat, improving fish passage and removing dams.

## A local connection

The Tulalip Tribes and partners have worked to restore the [Qwuloolt Estuary in Marysville](https://www.qwuloolt.org/?ref=justabouts.com). A levee breach on Aug. 28, 2015, reconnected the site with river water and tides after more than a century of separation.
