Democrats were leading enough Washington House races Friday evening to reach a two-thirds majority in the chamber, if those leads hold as more ballots are counted.

A Justabouts tally of all 98 House contests in the Secretary of State’s [public results file generated at 7:29 p.m. Nov. 6](https://app.enhancedvoting.com/cdn/results/washington/export-20261103.json?ref=justabouts.com) found Democratic-preferring candidates ahead in **67 races** and Republican-preferring candidates ahead in 31\. The results remain unofficial.

One close contest is in the 25th District, where Democrat David Berg led Republican Michael Keaton by 669 votes: 28,299 to 27,630, with 69 write-ins. Later counts can change that margin and the statewide picture.

## Why the two-thirds mark matters

The [House has 98 members](https://leg.wa.gov/about-the-legislature/house-of-representatives/?ref=justabouts.com), making 66 seats the threshold for a two-thirds majority of its full membership. That number matters for some of the Legislature’s most consequential votes.

Under [Article XXIII, section 1 of the state Constitution](https://leg.wa.gov/state-laws-and-rules/washington-state-constitution/?section=697b5d20-b7a6-44e4-91c7-ae7fff95ce21&ref=justabouts.com), proposing a constitutional amendment requires two-thirds of the elected members in each legislative chamber. Voters then decide the amendment at the next general election, with approval requiring a majority of those voting on it.

A veto override follows a different rule. [Article III, section 12](https://leg.wa.gov/state-laws-and-rules/washington-state-constitution/?section=62da7e39-e41a-4405-be4e-ed6f593ca55f&ref=justabouts.com) requires two-thirds of the members present in each chamber. Both processes therefore depend on votes in the Senate as well as the House, and elected members still vote individually on each proposal.
