*Updated Nov. 6, 2026, using the state’s unofficial results snapshot generated at 7:29 p.m. Pacific.*

Votes against repealing Washington’s high-earners income tax continued to lead Friday evening’s count, both statewide and in Snohomish and Island counties.

Initiative Measure IP26-645, often shortened to I-645, had 1,201,785 yes votes, or 42.33%, and 1,637,526 no votes, or 57.67%, in the [Secretary of State’s official returns](https://app.enhancedvoting.com/results/public/washington/elections/20261103/ballot-items/01000000-c099-693d-d4e5-08df1b1fe635?ref=justabouts.com). The no side led by 435,741 votes. Additional ballots remain to be counted.

## What the local count shows

- **Snohomish County:** 179,295 no votes, or 56.44%, and 138,378 yes votes, or 43.56%.
- **Island County:** 24,338 no votes, or 56.60%, and 18,665 yes votes, or 43.40%.

Island County’s figures include the whole county, rather than Camano Island alone. All figures above come from the same state results snapshot.

## What “yes” and “no” mean

A yes vote supports repealing the income tax. A no vote opposes repeal and leaves the existing law in place. The measure also would prohibit state and local taxes on individual income or measured by individual income, according to its official ballot description.

## When would the tax begin?

The [law enacted in March](https://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2025-26/Htm/Bills/Session%20Laws/Senate/6346-S.SL.htm?ref=justabouts.com) schedules the tax to begin with income received in 2028, with taxes due in 2029\. Its rate is 9.9% of Washington taxable income.

The law includes a $1 million standard deduction per individual. Spouses and state-registered domestic partners share one $1 million deduction, whether they file jointly or separately. The calculation starts with federal adjusted gross income and applies state modifications, deductions and exemptions.

That distinction matters when reading the election results: rejecting repeal would retain the existing tax law and its future timetable.

## What happens next

The count remains unofficial, and this article does not declare the measure’s final outcome. The [official results page](https://app.enhancedvoting.com/results/public/washington/elections/20261103/ballot-items/01000000-c099-693d-d4e5-08df1b1fe635?ref=justabouts.com) will carry later totals as counties report more ballots.
