A new national grant program could help eligible farmers in Snohomish County and on Camano Island put conservation plans into practice next year.

The National Young Farmers Coalition [launched its Next Generation Farmer Fund on Oct. 28](https://youngfarmers.org/2026/10/release-next-generation-farmer-fund/?ref=justabouts.com), offering **$10,000–$50,000** for work focused on soil health, water management, energy use and biodiversity. The award amount includes technical-assistance costs.

Applications close **Dec. 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific**. Washington farms are within the program’s nationwide geographic eligibility.

## Who should take a look

The [detailed eligibility rules](https://youngfarmers.org/get-involved/next-generation-farmer-fund/?ref=justabouts.com) specify applicants who will be **40 or younger on Dec. 31, 2027**, actively farming or ranching during the 2027 growing season, and producing food or fiber as a primary or significant agricultural purpose.

The proposed practice must be new on the project land. Work implemented there during the 2026 growing season is excluded. Applicants in shared operations should also review how the fund’s age criteria apply to their partners or decision-making group.

Funded projects work with a technical-assistance provider. Applicants can identify that person later, and the coalition offers help finding suitable support.

## Applications and an information session

Applications can cover one to four conservation practices.

A program webinar on **Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. Pacific** will explain the fund and take questions. The registration and application links are on the [official program page](https://youngfarmers.org/get-involved/next-generation-farmer-fund/?ref=justabouts.com).

## Local planning help

Separately, [Snohomish Conservation District offers free farm visits](https://snohomishcd.org/sound-farms?ref=justabouts.com) with certified planners who can discuss pasture, fencing, drainage, nutrients, mud and manure, and other property goals. Its [service area includes Snohomish County and Camano Island](https://snohomishcd.org/programs-services?ref=justabouts.com).
