A giant wooden troll could become a new place for families to explore in the Stanwood-Camano area next spring, with organizers now targeting April 2027 instead of October.
The earlier date comes with an important condition. In an October 30 update, the Stanwood-Camano Troll Committee said it had reached half its fundraising goal and needs to raise the balance to keep the April schedule.
Danish artist Thomas Dambo will create the sculpture from reclaimed wood. His large outdoor trolls combine folklore, environmental themes and the experience of discovering art in nature.
A community project, with the location still under wraps
The idea began with the Daughters of Norway. A volunteer steering committee is leading the effort with Arrowhead Ranch, the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation and the Camano Island Chamber of Commerce, according to the project website. The City of Stanwood has provided a letter of support.
Organizers describe the sculpture as a permanent installation that will be free to visit. They have not disclosed the exact site. Parking, hours and access details will be announced once the site is confirmed, so families will need to wait before planning a visit.
The committee also plans an event in early 2027 to reveal a rendering of the troll. A date has not been announced.
How neighbors can take part
The committee is seeking help with reclaimed materials, meals during construction, fundraising and other work. Its Get Involved information explains how to volunteer or offer materials.
Donations go through the Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation, the project's fiscal sponsor. Residents can follow the organizers' website for fundraising updates, the design reveal and eventual visiting details.
